Ande Barrett-Hegan

The work is inspired by my environment and memories, as well as influences by those artists who have opened up new perceptual pathways.

The paintings I am currently working on are mostly abstract, often within a square format. My motivation and intention comes from experimentation with colour and structure. Both elements are necessary to achieve the expression and atmosphere I try to communicate.

In recent times I have concentrated primarily on abstraction using colour juxtaposition, amorphous shapes and gestural mark making. Beginning with a general concept and colour range, it is important for me to step back, review, and adjust elements along the way.

I hope to allude to the familiar, yet beg the question, and still make sense to the viewer. It is important that the work retains it’s paint quality yet does not fall into the “recipe” trap. Therefore, experimentation is always part of the mix.
